LUNG FUNCTION LABORATORY TESTS

Spirometry / Flow Volume Loop

This is a routine test where the patient blows into a machine and the flow of air is measured. It is quick, reliable and mandatory in the assessment of asthma and other common respiratory diseases.

Comprehensive lung Function with body plethysmography

A body plethysmograph is the most accurate measure of lung volumes available. It also enables measurement of gas transfers (the efficiency of the lungs to use the air we breathe in). Comprehensive testing is needed to assess lung diseases and pulmonary vascular diseases. In obstructive lung disease, helium dilution testing is inaccurate.

Aridol bronchial provocation challenge

This is the most modern and safest test of bronchial reactivity. This needs to be assessed in patients in whom the diagnosis of asthma is uncertain and for those who need to be assessed for fitness for diving.

Exercise testing

6 minute walk test

Is essentially walking for 6 minutes under supervision while your oxygen levels are being measured. It is a reproducible measurement of exercise capacity and performed by experienced physiotherapist. It can be performed as part of diagnosing a disease, or monitoring the response to therapy. It is also necessary to determine if supplemental oxygen is needed.

Altitude Simulation Testing

This test measures the amount of oxygen that will be in the blood when the oxygen level drops as in a flight. It usually drops to a level of 14%, which is much lower than the usual 21%. This information determines whether oxygen will be required for flying.
